Welcome to Kathy McKeown's Expressive fine Art
Where Color Becomes Reality
About Kathy McKeown
Hi there
I am a Canadian fine artist with over 35 years of experience creating expressive, realistic paintings of pets, people and landscapes. My work mainly focuses on capturing the soulful essence of each subject—the quiet tilt of a dog’s head, the light in a child’s eyes, the mood of a changing sky.
I work primarily in acrylics because they are flexible and versatile. They can dry quickly when I choose, or I can slow the drying time so I can build many layers in the same sitting. I love blending careful observation with loose, expressive marks. This mix of detail and emotion lets me tell the deeper story behind every face and place I paint.
My portfolio includes original artworks as well as a limited number of custom commissions. When I create a commissioned piece, I spend time getting to know the subject through photos and stories so the final painting feels personal, familiar and full of life.
Art has been a constant thread through most of my adult life, and it began in a very simple way: I wanted to paint over a scorch mark on the backsplash of my stove. That first, delightfully colourful experiment was such a calming, joyful experience that I haven’t stopped since. From that moment, I also discovered how much I enjoy sharing my process and my artwork with others. Through my blog, I plan to write about my creative journey, the techniques I use, and the stories behind my paintings—inviting you into the studio with me.
I also invite you to explore my gallery, follow my journey take a look at what I have created in my happy place. If by chance (or not) you choose me for a special portrait of a loved one or a landscape that reminds you of home, my goal will be to create artwork that feels deeply meaningful and becomes a piece that you will treasure for years.
